Astigmatism Astigmatism is a relatively common refractive disorder. It often occurs along with either Myopia (nearsightedness) or Hyperopia (farsightedness). Unlike myopia, where the eye ball is too long or hyperopia, where the eye ball is too short, astigmatism occurs when the cornea, the window of the eye, is more football shaped rather than basketball shaped. When astigmatism occurs, the light rays focus on two different areas near the retina instead of focusing on one clear spot. This can cause the person to see things blurry and in extreme cases elongated in the axis of the astigmatism. Astigmatism, along with myopia or hyperopia, can be easily corrected with glasses or refractive surgery such as LASIK.  |
