Computer Vision Syndrome

It is estimated that 8 out of 10 Americans who use a computer more than one hour per day have symptoms of computer vision syndrome (CVS). This syndrome consists of many symptoms. It is caused primarily due to using the eyes up close, posture, luminescence of computer monitors, and for those people who wear bifocals, the position of the bifocal in relation to the computer monitor.

Eye Strain
Headache
Back pain
Neck Pain
Dry Eye
Light Sensitivity
Sore or Tired Eyes
Red Eyes

Fortunately, there are things that can be done to lessen or avoid these symptoms. First, it is important to have a good adjustable chair that one can position properly to achieve good posture and a comfortable height in relation to the computer monitor. Second, since we tend to not blink as frequently when doing close visual tasks, our eyes tend to feel drier and thus can become red, it is important to take a rest of about 15 minutes from the computer work every hour. Artificial tears are helpful with this problem.

Third, and most important, it is essential to use proper glasses that work well with the working distances involved when using the computer. Since bifocals are located at the bottom of the lens and the monitor is usually above that level, one has to lift the head about 20 degrees to see the monitor. This is the main cause of back and neck pain which can also lead to headache. If half frame reading glasses are used, one has to tilt the head down as much as 45 degrees which can lead to the same symptoms. Reading glasses usually only work at a limited and fixed distance which can create stress on the eyes when trying to look at documents or the keyboard. Also, depending on the reading glasses, many people have to lean closer to the monitor to see, putting ever more stress on the neck and back.

Fortunately there is and ideal lens called the Shamir™ Office Lens that uniquely eliminates or minimizes all the symptoms of CVS. The Shamir™ Office Lens was clinically tested and designed by one of the world’s leading progressive lens designers in conjunction with known ophthalmic and orthopedic physicians. It is designed for professionals, computer users, and hobbyists. The entire lens is essentially a blended trifocal/bifocal. The top half, which is at the level of the computer monitor, sees at the 2 to 4 feet range and the lower half sees up much closer at the level of the keyboard or desk.

Not only is the Shamir™ Office Lens ideal for computer use, but it is also ideal for anyone doing close visual tasks for a long period of time. Just a few of the professions that can greatly benefit from this lens are:
Accountant
Attorney
Dentist
Librarian
Musician
Engineer
Mechanic
Hairdresser
Secretary
Hobbyist
Avid Reader

In summary, CVS is not something that we have to suffer from. Please see our opticians at Romanoff Optical to demonstrate the benefits of the ShamirTM Office Lens.
