Nutrition and the Eye

Good ocular nutrition is essential for the eye and to decrease the risk of certain aging conditions of the eye. As we age, it is very important to minimize the risk of developing diseases associated with aging. The American Medical Association has recommended that all adults supplement their diets with not only vitamins but also with certain minerals. Diets that are not rich in all the vitamin groups may be associated with increase risk of chronic diseases including certain diseases of the eye.

Even though, it has not been absolutely proven that taking antioxidant multiple vitamin supplements can absolutely prevent eye disease, there is a growing amount of medical literature that suggests that these supplements may lower the risk. It has been estimated that only 12% of American adults consume enough fresh fruits and vegetables. This category of food accounts for most of the antioxidants and minerals that we require. Taking a complete multi-nutrient supplement can make the difference as we age in regard to many facets of our health.

There have been some studies that have suggested that the incidence of cataracts may be reduced with nutritional supplements. Recently the Age Related Eye Disease Study (AREADS), a large clinical trial supported by the National Eye Institute, found that high risk individuals or people with macular degeneration can reduce their risk of losing vision by 19% by taking appropriate vitamins. Both of the above diseases may also be associated by exposure to ultraviolet light. By taking recommended nutritional supplements as well as wearing protective glasses, we can at least attempt to reduce our risk.

Dr. Romanoff endorses and recommends vitamin/nutrition supplements that are of the highest quality and made from natural ingredients, or at least the most bioavailable ingredients as possible. The company that Dr. Romanoff recommends is ScienceBased Health. This company produces a complete line of ocular nutrition that meets all the guidelines of the AREDS Study as well as other nutritional supplements. Since some levels of vitamins have been shown to increase the chance of lung cancer in cigarette smokers, ScienceBased Health also has a vitamin line more appropriate for smokers.

Besides vitamins, ScienceBased Health also manufactures HydroEyes, which is a supplement for individuals with moderate to severe dry eye syndrome. These soft gel capsules contain fish and berry oils as well as musin which are both integral parts of the tear film. Artificial tears only replace the watery portion of the tear film and often do not solve the problem of dry eye syndrome.

Most importantly, ScienceBased Health is a company that is has a panel of ophthalmologist and nutritionists that constantly reviews the world’s literature on nutrition. When new recommendations are suggested in the literature, their vitamins are updated with the most optimal recommended doses of each vitamin and/or mineral.
