Glaucoma Diagnosis and Treatment with Our Ophthalmologist in Sylvania

As an ophthalmologist in Sylvania, Dr. Romanoff from Romanoff Vision has had the pleasure of getting to know his community and providing excellent eye care for a range of conditions. One of those conditions includes glaucoma which is an issue he frequently diagnoses and manages.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of vision loss in America; if an eye doctor does not treat the condition it can lead to total blindness. It develops when the optic nerve becomes progressively damaged. This damage is usually associated with increased inner eye pressure, which can happen if fluid inside the eye doesn't drain properly.

Risk factors for glaucoma include family history, older age, high blood pressure, long-term use of steroid medications, diabetes, extreme myopia (nearsightedness), or a history of eye surgery or trauma.

Signs and Symptoms of Glaucoma

When signs and symptoms do develop, it typically means the condition has advanced considerably. Below are some of the main symptoms for the most common type of glaucoma:

  • "Blind spots" in a person's visual field
  • Peripheral vision loss (tunnel vision)
  • Double vision
  • Hypersensitivity to glare and bright lights

A rare type of glaucoma, called angle-closure glaucoma, is considered a medical emergency. If you notice a sudden onset of eye pain, headache, and vision loss, don't hesitate and call 911 right away.

Treatment for Glaucoma With Our Sylvania Eye Doctor

Our eye doctor and his team can diagnose glaucoma long before noticeable symptoms occur. This is great news because the earlier you or a loved one receive treatment, the better the chances you have of managing the condition.

Treatment options for glaucoma depend on several factors, like your health status and the stage of your disease. Common approaches include medications (especially to lower inner eye pressure), surgery, and lifestyle education.
