Children Eye Care: Detecting Vision Problems in Your Child

Did you know that over 60 percent of children who passed a vision screening by their pediatrician or at preschool have difficulty seeing? Did you also know that 1 out of every 250 children develop a cataract before birth or during their early childhood? Dr. Bennett S. Romanoff, your ophthalmologist in Sylvania and Toledo, OH, understands that most of the way a child learns is through vision and that only a comprehensive eye examination can detect eye problems a child may be experiencing.

Symptoms of Vision Problems in Children

  • Tilting their head
  • Squinting
  • Covering one eye or rubbing the eye
  • Avoiding puzzles, coloring, and other detailed activity
  • Becomes impatient when attempting to read, play ball, or ride a bike
  • Sitting too close to a screen or holding a book too close

How is A Vision Problem Diagnosed?

Our ophthalmologist performs a comprehensive eye exam to get a detail view of how your child’s eyes function as well as how much of vision is affected. Our exams evaluate:

  • Visual Acuity: Seeing clearly at a distance
  • Eye Tracking: Ability to keep the eyes on a target, like a printed page or a ball
  • Focusing: Ability to accurately maintain vision at different levels of distance

Commonly Detected Vision Problems in Childhood

In addition to an eye examination, our eye doctor will discuss your child’s overall health and any pertinent family history and symptoms. It is important to remember that a child who has a 20/20 vision can still have focusing and tracking problems. Common vision problems in children include:

  • Amblyopia (Lazy eye)
  • Myopia (Nearsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (farsightedness)
  • Astigmatism
