Eye Injuries

Your vision is one of your most essential senses. This is why it is important to safeguard your eyes by all means. If your eye gets injured, it needs careful and urgent first aid. The main goal of first aid is to prevent further damage as you plan to visit an eye doctor. If you are wondering how to administer first aid for an injured eye, keep reading as Romanoff Vision takes you through some common eye injuries and their first aid.

Common Eye Injuries

These are the common eye injuries we treat in our clinic:

  • Foreign objects
  • Blunt trauma
  • Chemical burns
  • Bleeding near the eye
  • Punctures or cuts to the eye

First Aid for Foreign Objects

  • Avoid rubbing your eyes as it may cause abrasions to the cornea
  • Try to blink a couple of times and allow tears to wash out the objects
  • If the particles are still stuck, keep your eyes closed and seek medical help

First Aid for Chemical Burns

  • Flush the eye with eyewash solution or sterile water immediately
  • Seeking medical attention right away

All Eye Injuries First Aid Treatment

  • Don't touch your eye, rub or apply pressure
  • Don't try to remove a stuck object in your eye
  • Never apply ointment or medication to your eye unless prescribed for the treatment of the injury
  • Seek medical help immediately, if possible, an ophthalmologist

The first aid tips above only represent some immediate care for your eye injury. It's crucial to seek medical attention from an eye doctor immediately. Don't underestimate the seriousness of an eye injury, even if you don't have pain. Ignoring medical attention puts you at risk of permanently damaging your eye, possibly leading to vision loss. A thorough eye exam from an eye doctor can rule out any severe damage.
