Glaucoma Surgery

When left untreated, glaucoma often leads to vision loss and sometimes, blindness. Comprehensive eye exams are key to detecting glaucoma early. At Romanoff Vision, we treat a variety of eye health issues, including glaucoma. Dr. Romanoff provides eye care services for residents in Sylvania, Toledo, Monroe, Bedford, Temperance, Lambertville, and the surrounding communities.

Glaucoma Surgery

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma damages the optic nerve at the back of the eye. It is often the result of high pressure in the eye caused by too much intraocular fluid. However, some people with no elevated eye pressure can develop glaucoma. It may occur in one or both eyes.

Symptoms

Diagnosis is important because people with glaucoma often do not exhibit symptoms during the early stages. In the later stages, however, those with the disease have already lost some vision. The open-angle type is the most common form of this disease.

Symptoms of glaucoma may include patchy blind spots in the peripheral or central vision. Later, the patient may experience tunnel vision. The much rarer angle-closure variety is another form of glaucoma. It sometimes comes on suddenly and its characteristics are an eye or eyes that are red, eye pain, nausea, vomiting, blurry vision, and halos.

Eye Exams

Our eye doctor will dilate your eyes to widen your pupils. During the session, Dr. Romanoff views your optic nerve and other parts of your eye. This thorough inspection measures your intraocular pressure. Furthermore, you may receive a visual field test, which measures your peripheral vision.

Eye Surgery and Other Treatments

This disease can be treated with eye drops or oral medication. If they do not work, laser treatments that use a beam of light to unclog the eye's natural drainage area (trabecular meshwork) may be suggested. If these measures are unsuccessful, our eye doctor may advise eye surgery.

The surgical procedure used for glaucoma aims to lower the patient’s eye pressure by creating a new and better drainage path for the intraocular fluid. This includes making a tiny incision in the white of the eye and removing some of the trabecular meshwork.
